In the busy schedule of ours every desire is least of our priority. We don’t have time enough to invest in things that we would love to do. And we have become part of an era where quick fixes are far popular than useful. Where above challenges are a big concerns for becoming world’s best football player or Musician. Basic skills and capabilities in variety of context are always available to add to our portfolio. How?
We don’t have time enough to invest in things that we would love to do. But do we need to?
Today I want to share with you technology of how to learn and build new capabilities fast. Of all the contribution that Dr. John grinder has made this is the most important. What they(John & Richard) found out that if you actually mirror someone, like you know if sit the way they are sitting, you seem to connect to that person. Now there is more to it, It’s not just mimicking and sitting like the other person but it’s becoming them and feeling what they are feeling.
You must have heard storied of monkeys.
Where does it come from? From a concept called mirror neurons. You must have heard storied of monkeys. If you throw a banana and the monkeys would throw the bananas too. One monkey throws a banana another monkey throw banana. You take a hat you drop it and other monkeys drop it too. Now a reason that happens is because the monkeys have something called mirror neurons. There is a neurological connection in their brain that replicates everything that they see with their eyes on the outside. They see someone doing something they immediately do the same.
Obviously we are the evolved species, aren’t we!
Now what they found out was that humans also have mirror neurons. and about 10 years ago they found out that we have a way advance system of mirror neurons than monkeys or any another animal. Obviously we are the evolved species, aren’t we! And the purpose of mirror neurons is to learn new things. That’s how we learn to walk. That’ how we learn to talk.
See in the hierarchy of evolution like some animals, They are born knowing how to walk, like a cow gives birth to a calf and the calf does’t have to learn to walk it can just walk. Something like a chicken what happens is that when the chicken is hatched the first person it sees it associates it’s identity with that living creature. And most times it’s the mother. But the selection criteria is that the first living creature that it sees. And as soon as it sees that living creature and associates it’s identity with that creature, typically the mother, the chick would do what ever the mother is doing. No conscious thinking no my mother is lifting the left leg I am going to lift the left leg, it’s neurologically wired to repeat so there is this thing that kicks in and then the same thing is replicated.
Now with human the extra ordinary gift that we have is that we can shift disassociation on demand.
Now with human the extra ordinary gift that we have is that we can shift disassociation on demand. Which means I don’t only have to learn from my mother and my father and the relatives but I can continue to unconsciously assimilate what is going on from everybody around me so the mirror neurons allow me to do something that I don’t know I have to do. I don’t know what particular thing is important for me to maintain balance.
keeping our own head in way that it’s not fighting with gravity; the most important thing for us to learn to walk we take it for granted but we learnt it when we were crawling.
For example: Children, when they learn to walk the most important development in their walking skill is when they learn to lift their head. now as simple as it may seem. it is a very complex thing. because the first time the child is learning to keep its own head in way that it’s not fighting with gravity. So the child can keep the head held up for hours and it won’t develop pain. That is the most important thing for us to learn to walk we take it for granted but we learnt it when we were crawling.
Now the child doesn’t know that it has to learn to lift the head up but it’s mirror neurons are active. They are trying to replicate that the adult is doing. the first thing that muscles develop is around the neck. and they continue to replicate everything that the adult is doing. There are more than a million calculation more than 10000 muscles that have to synchronize for you to be able to stand, just stand . You know standing a dynamic equilibrium you are not just standing you are actually slight falling off balance and gaining balance so think of it if I have to exaggerate what is going on you are swaying like a pendulum very complex part you don’t even know you have to use those muscles. that’s where the mirror neurons come. they start mirroring and they find out Oh… this is how it works. so the mirror neurons are designed to help you to learn fast to help you to pick up things that you don’t even know you need to pick. And as a child you don’t have emotion that can limit you from doing that you don’t go in and say well that is not me.
And a lot of times people have the wrong combinations. They Mirror things like depression from people and stop mirroring things like the happiness and stuff like that.
In fact a doctor once told me her name is Meera. she told me that she heard this from a neurologist that the way the mirror neurons work is that as soon as you see someone smiles your mirror neuron in your brain send you instruction to smile(not in words). They move the exact same muscles that are moving and as soon as that happens what happens is that there is a second set of instruction that goes from your brain that says it’s the other person smiling not you. Cancel that out! And the difference between these two is micro seconds, so the mirror neurons are always active but there is a choice mechanism going on who you want to mirror and who you don’t want to mirror and it’s most times and unconscious process. And a lot of times people have the wrong combinations. They Mirror things like depression from people and stop mirroring things like the happiness and stuff like that.
So the key to acquire what you admire is do develop capabilities to be able to take back control, taking back choice into your hand as to what to mirror and what not to mirror.
So mirroring is a tool that allows you to become the other person and thereby the person seems to like you a lot.
So one of the things that John and Richard found out was that mirroring is not only about learning fast when you mirror someone they feel understood they feel as if you know them very well because what’s going on is when you mirror them physically you are also mirroring how they think, you know the old saying that the body and the mind are connected. So you change the way you breath, you change your posture you thoughts change. The same thing happens when you mirror. When you are mirroring some one you are not only changing the physiology you are also accepting the way that other person is thinking. So mirroring is a tool that allows you to become the other person and thereby the person seems to like you a lot.
There is always a quest of being able to learn more or do more. Choosing to learn what is needed most can change the path subtly and can enable dreams to come true. What would it be for you?
