In the world today where technology is so well integrated(largely) in everyone’s life. Everyone is well informed and is aware of classification of competencies and skills needed to be good at what they do. From a student to a professional, from a leader to a parent, from a SME owner to a CEO of an MNC. But are they really?

Current business needs require a person to be good at everything. Decision making, creative thinking, public speaking, sales and so on. Fundamentally they all are important for any individual to function fully and grow in the field they aspire to grow in or become the person they dreamt of becoming while growing up.

But to be able to do the above mentioned activities there are finer elements that are needed. For example- Superman can decide to intervene or not in a situation where someone is at risk but the fundamental capability needed for him is not decision making. Capabilities needed are the ones that can allow him to be instrumental is his ability to fly and fight. In lack of both even if someone believes that they are superman they aren’t and  we all know that’s a death sentence.

Capabilities is a prerequisite for having even the possibility to develop expertise in a  field. Capability is like the prerequisite, it’s like the minimum requirement necessary to even have the opportunity to develop the expertise.

For example, let’s say someone is tone deaf now no matter how much practice they do, how much guitar they play, how many classes they go to; they are not going to be able to differentiate notes they are not gonna be a singer. They can’t (most times), they can’t  play instruments so that’s a capability. And the old adage of practice makes a man perfect wouldn’t apply to them because that thing is just missing.
